Gynecomastia
This surgery is performed to reduce enlarged, female-like breasts in men using liposuction and/or cutting out excess glandular tissue.
Anesthesia and Surgery Facility
Smaller areas of gynecomastia may be addressed under local anesthesia with IV sedation and multiple areas are more often addressed under general anesthesia. Gynecomastia surgery is more commonly performed on an outpatient basis. Extensive procedures may require a 23 hour stay.
Side Effects
There is expected temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, and at times a burning sensation.
Risks
These include the possibility of infection, asymmetry, rippling or skin laxity, pigmentation changes, or skin injury. There may be fluid retention or in rare cases excessive scarring if tissue was cut away.
Recovery
Return to work varies with the extensiveness of procedure and the type of work. However, most individuals are back within 3 to 7 days. Some strenuous activity may be limited for 2 to 3 weeks. Full recovery from swelling and bruising may take in the range of 3 to 6 months.
Duration of Results
Permanent.
Before and After Photo Gallery
Although each person's results will defer, before and after photos are good examples of potential changes. They should be used not only as a comparison of techniques and surgeons, but are a good starting points for evaluation, comparison and discussion with your surgeon.
