Laser Resurfacing
This is performed to smooth the face and smooth fine wrinkles using a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser device that treats layers of damaged skin. It can also soften lines around the eyes and mouth as well as minimize facial scars and unevenly pigmented areas.
Anesthesia and Surgery Facility
Local with IV sedation is most commonly used. This is routinely an outpatient procedure. Operative times can range from just a few minutes to 1 hour. May require more than one session for optimal results.
Side Effects
There is expected temporary swelling, discomfort, and lightening of treated skin. Acute sun sensitivity and increased sensitivity to makeup may also be experienced. Pinkness or redness of skin may persist for up to 6 months.
Risks
There is a slight risk or burns or injuries caused by laser heat, scarring, and changes in skin color. Flare-ups of viral infections (cold sores) or other infections is rare.
Recovery
Return to work is usually 2 weeks. Avoidance of more strenuous activity is recommended for 4 to 6 weeks. Complete fading of redness may take up to 6 months. Limiting sun exposure is recommended for several months.
Duration of Results
Most individuals enjoy long-lasting results, but this procedure does not stop aging. New wrinkles and expression lines may form as skin ages.
Before and After Photo Gallery
Although each person's results will defer, before and after photos are good examples of potential changes. They should be used not only as a comparison of techniques and surgeons, but are a good starting points for evaluation, comparison and discussion with your surgeon.
