Otoplasty
This procedure is performed to set prominent ears back closer to the head, or to reduce the size of large ears. This procedure is most often performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14 years.
Anesthesia and Surgery Facility
General anesthesia is usually used on young children. For older children and adults local with IV sedation is used. This is routinely an outpatient procedure. Operative time is approximately 2 to 3 hours.
Side Effects
There is expected temporary throbbing, aching, swelling, redness, and numbness of the ears.
Risks
These include the possibility of infection of the cartilage of the ears, scarring, or blood clot that may need to be drained.
Recovery
Return to work or school within 5 to 7 days. Some strenuous activity and contact sports may be limited for 1 to 2 months.
Duration of Results
Usually permanent.
