Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

This is performed to correct drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes by removing excess skin, fat and muscle. Upper eyelid surgery may be covered by insurance in cases where it is performed to correct excess upper eyelid skin which may interfere with vision.

Anesthesia and Surgery Facility

A local anesthesia with sedation is the most common approach except when performed with other facial rejuvenation, and then general anesthesia may be used. This is routinely an outpatient procedure. Operative time is approximately 1½ hours for upper or lower lids alone and 2½ hours for both upper and lower lids.

Side Effects

There is temporary discomfort, tightness of the eyelids, swelling, and bruising. There may also be temporary dryness, burning or itching of the eyes. Excessive tearing or sensitivity to light for the first few weeks may be experienced.

Risks

Temporary blurred or double vision, dryness of the eyes, infection bleeding or swelling of the corners of the eyelids are possible risks. Formation of whiteheads or slight asymmetry in the healing or scarring may be seen. Difficulty in closing the eyes completely in rare cases may be permanent. If there is a drawing down of the lower lid, there may be further surgery required. An extremely rare occurrence of blindness has been reported in the medical literature.

Recovery

The first 2-3 days following surgery, limited activity and the avoidance of reading is recommended. Most individuals return to work and social settings in approximately 7-10 days. Contact lenses may need to be avoided for 2 weeks or more. Strenuous activities as well as alcohol should be avoided for 3 weeks. It may take several weeks for the final results to be apparent.

Duration of Results

Results of this procedure are enjoyed for several years and for some, may be permanent.
